Ava on Grumpies, Tadpoles & Roscars!

Make no mistake…. Ava is a character…. she can come up with some of the funniest things and have us in hysterics, here are just a few of her prize pearlers from this past weekend:

Running through the house with her underpants on her head – Look at me, I’m a roscar! (rock star)

Roscar

While watching the Brumbies/Warratah’s Super 15 rugby game – Go Grumpies!

After I commented that Miley had her tail tucked so far between her legs that she was wearing a tampon – Look Miley runs like a tadpole!

While lying across the coffee table – I think I need to bath & go to bed, my batteries need to be charged!

The day her Princess Sofia Princess For A Day kit was delivered, she asked me to take a photo of her, with the fakest smile, when I asked her to smile nicely for the camera, her response – No, this is how Princesses do it!

Ava as Princess Sofia

On our way to Barney yesterday, she informed me that when she spoke with Barney, she was going to tell him that her friend, Amy, was not being very nice to her. When I asked her why Amy wasn’t being nice to her she replied: I can’t tell you Mom, you’re NOT Barney!

I need to keep documenting the funny things Ava says, she is a real character and I never want to forget how she has had us in fits of giggles!

Silence Is Golden…

Unless you have a toddler!

So on Sunday morning, Walter was out, I was enjoying a cup of coffee, when I noticed it was very very quiet. With a 3 year old in the house, this can only mean trouble! I called and called and called Ava… and was greeted with silence. And I knew… I just knew she was up to something.

I found her… In Hannah’s room, looking VERY guilty, with my camera hanging around her neck, the screen flipped open, lens cap removed and the lens zoomed all the way out. When I asked her what she was going, she told me she was taking photo’s of Hannah’s room to send to her!

I didn’t think much of it, she’s never touched a camera before so really what’s the worst that could have happened, but on Sunday night, I came across these pictures on my camera…. the pictures she took for Hannah!

Sweet child, she is SO excited for Hannah’s arrival!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Makes Ava Sad

Ava has a favorite You Tube video…. Twinkle twinkle Little Star, she loves how the Owl and the Star fly together but it breaks her little heart every time she see’s how sad the owl is when they’re separated.

Here’s the video:

And here’s Ava’s reaction to it, every single time she watches it!

A Rite Of Passage….

And learning to eat a white candy coated Easter Egg has to rank as one of my favourites. Everyone knows, there’s an art to eating these particular eggs. First you got to lick it till you’ve made the candy coating soft…. then you’ve got to wipe it over your lips to make white lipstick and only then can you sink your teeth into it and take a big bite!

Ava is definitely on the right track!

Wordless Wednesday – School Christmas Party

Each year Ava’s school has a Christmas party where all the kiddies get to donate a Christmas gift to a child from a pre-determined charity.

Last years Christmas party was held at Elf’s Hill, the same venue as Ava’s birthday party and in my opinion, probably the best kiddies party venue in Jozi.

Beautiful Images From Ava’s Birthday Party

Those of you who have been reading for a while will know that I have a photographer of choice – Bronwyn from Heart & Soul Photography, she has photographed all of our outdoor and studio shoots for the last two years, as well as Ava’s last two birthday parties.

Yesterday I got the the photo’s from Ava’s 3rd birthday and once again, I was blown away by the beauty of her images. How she manages to capture the essence of a each subjects soul in every image she takes, its just beyond beautiful.

Here are a couple of my favourite black and white photo’s from Ava’s party:

Ava – The Actress/Comedian

Ava has always had a strong personality and the older she gets the more her the various aspects of her personality have begun to shine through. A while ago I was having a chat with her bestie’s Mom and she was asking me what I thought Ava would be one day…. I really didn’t need to think too hard… the way Ava has blossomed in the last 6 months, it has become abundantly clear that madam will thrive in an artistic/drama environment. And not because she’s a drama queen, because she really isn’t, it would be because she loves to act, she loves to make people laugh and she’s quite the little comedian!

Silly Girl

Here she is encouraging Isabella to join in the funny faces:

Silly Girls
She loves to tease and she loves getting a reaction out of people. The more they laugh at her antics, the more animated she becomes.
On the flight to Cape Town, she stood in the aisle of the plane and proudly announced to all who would hear: “This is my dad, he’s so big and he’s always a winner!”
On the flight home, madam climbed into the aisle to make another announcement but instead of having her daddy’s chest puff with pride, she announced to all: “This is my daddy, he’s so big and he’s got moobs! (man boobs)!” You could hear the sniggers coming from the people around us, the more they laughed, the more animated she became.
She has also told me quite seriously in the past, when I’m wearing one of my backless sun-dresses  “pull your dress up Moma, your back boobies are showing!” Gah!
Yesterday she pulled another cracker, because I’ve been off work with Bronchitis and Sinusitis, Walter had to take her to school yesterday morning, it’s been very hot in Jozi, we’re in the midst of a scorching heatwave and he’d been rushing, so by the time he was out the shower and dressed, he was sweating and standing in front of the fan trying to cool off. When she asked him what he was doing he explained that he was “sweating like a pig” and wanted to sit by the fan for a few minutes.
At school drop off, Madam proudly marched into her new classroom with her new teacher and announced to all: “This is my daddy, he’s so big and he’s a sweaty pig!”
I don’t know where she comes up with most of this stuff but it’s truly hysterical and she loves the laughter and reaction she gets to her antics, a real little stand up comedian.
Here are a couple of other Ava-isms that I just love:
Crying one morning, she told us she didn’t want to wear low pants, she wanted to wear high pants. After much head scratching and confusion, we asked her to show us what the difference was between low and high pants and nearly died laughing when she showed us that low pants are leggings and high pants are shorts!
She also refuses to call a skipping rope, or any kind of rope, for that matter, a rope, it can only be called by one thing in our house – a Yeeha! *said with a nice Southern Twang*
Her favourite question is: Do you love…? So she’ll be standing with a Yeeha in her hand and will turn to me and say: “Moma, do you see this Yeeha? Do you LOVE this Yeeha?” And then have herself in fits of giggles!
Or while loving Dexter, our male Chihuahua, she’ll say: “Moma, do you see this Winkey Boy? Do you LOVE this Winkey Boy?”
Funny child! She keeps us in stitches!

Pink Dinosaurs, Water Slides & Butt Breaks!

I was anxious yesterday morning, when my eyes flew open just after 5am & I raced to the curtains to yank them open and check on the weather. After a week of overcast and rainy weather, the day of Ava’s party dawned and it could not have been more perfect weather.

We’d booked a water slide for the party and I had been fretting all week about what we’d do if the day of the party dawned with bad weather but the weather God’s were smiling on Ava’s special day and after a year of attending all of her friends parties, it was finally her turn to have her party, she was beyond excited for her pink dinosaur party.

Cupcakes

We had her party at Elf’s Hill this year and all I can say is wow, what a great venue, by far the best kids party venue that we’ve been to in the 3 years we’ve been attending kiddies parties. The playground is massive with a huge selection of goodies for the kids to choose from. You only have to have a look at their website to see that their play area really is a wonderland for kids.

Ava sliding

By the time we arrived, everything had been set up and we were ready to enjoy the party.

Party Table
The water slide was a huge hit and just about every child there spent an almost solid two and a half hours running and sliding down that slide!
Amy & Ava
Tristan Sliding
Ava sliding on the water slide
The weather was scorching hot and because I’m always a bok for sport, it took very little convincing from anyone before I’d decided I was going down the water slide in my dress. Sadly I misjudged the speed at which I hit the water slide on my first attempt and I literally shot off the side of the slide, using my butt cheeks as breaks as I hit the grass. Thankfully I don’t embarrass easily and was back up for a second attempt which I did perfectly! Splashing into the splash pool at the end of the slide to the heart warming words of my daughter telling her friends:
“My mommy is crazy, she’s so cool!”
Beautiful child
Ava got very spoiled and when we got home we sorted through all her gifts but half way through opening, we decided to pack some away for her to open on Thursday, which is her actual birthday because there was just so much and she was clearly overwhelmed by everything she had received.
Her eyes literally lit up when she came across this mermaid Barbie in amongst all the treasure she had received.

It really was a fabulous birthday party and the perfect way to celebrate Ava’s 3rd year. A big thanks to all our family and friends who attended and helped make such a special day a memorable one!

My Baby Is Turning 3!

I really can’t believe it. The first year of her life seemed to go by so slowly and since then the years seems to be speeding up. One day soon I’m going to wake up and she’ll be 18!

The big difference this year is that Madam has some serious opinions about what she wants for her birthday and for Christmas and with them being so close together, we have to plan very carefully to ensure that she’s not disappointed on either her birthday or by Father Christmas.

This is her wishlist:

A mermaid outfit! Thankfully I’ve managed to track this one down on Amazon.com and a friend of mines Mom has bought it on our behalf as she lives in the US and bringing it to SA next week.

Mermaid Fancy Dress
A Baltorina doll!
Yes, I know they’re freaky but Ava is totally taken with them and wants to unpack them every time we’re in Toys R Us! I know they’re hand made but almost past out at the price! Thankfully her Granny and Grandpa feel that they want to spend the R800 for the 13″ one for her. My Mom says she is their only grandchild and they will buy it for her if they want to. So ok, sorted!
caroline
I really loved this one, her name is Caroline and she reminds me a lot of Ava when she was a new born!
A Cabbage Patch Kid but not just anyone, the I’m a Mermaid Cabbage Patch Kid, see a theme here?
cabbage-patch-kids-i-am-a-mermaid-doll-9015893-0-1351533855000
A toy kitchen, which I’ve already decided will be A Hello Kitty one!
Hello Kitty Kitchen
I’m hoping someone will buy her the matching kettle and toaster for her kitchen or a Hello Kitty pot set.
Other things she’s mentioned or shown interest in include puzzles, books, especially Dr Sues books, a swing ball, a dance mat, oh and lets not forget… a baby sister!

Mini Knight in Shining Armour & His Mini Damsel In Distress

I’ve blogged before about Ava and her best friend, Tristan. While both Ava & Tristan are popular children at school and have many friends, with him choosing to play with the boys & her choosing to play with the girls during free playtime at school, these two will ALWAYS seek each other out, preferring to be together. Play dates are simply not the same for either of them if the other is not there. Ava talks about Tristan all the time and I hear from Tristan’s mommy, that he does the same about Ava. When we have play dates together, this little guy literally sits on the side walk waiting for Ava to arrive and when he see’s our car pulling up, he starts dancing in excited anticipation for the arrival of his bestie.

Ava & Tristan 1

Watching their relationship develop has been so very very sweet. Ava and Tristan have known each other since they were 9 months old and started swimming together and then by a twist of fate, landing up in the same nursery school and in the same class where their friendship has blossomed. I’ve been told by Ava’s school teacher that Ava also does not like to share Tristan, when they play ring a ring a rosies or dance, she insists that no one else may dance with him except her.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all moonlight and roses either. These two, while they clearly adore each other, can also fight like cat and dog, with Ava always exerting her dominance over him. Tristan’s mom and I have become firm friends and we both have to stifling giggles constantly as we watch these two go from adoring each other to bickering like an old married couple.

These two little ones share a very special bond and it is heart-warming to watch as each of them go on individual journeys of self discovery while cultivating their special friendship. What has been most enlightening is watching how they have started to realize the difference between boys and girls and thereby the differences between the two of them.

The last few times we’ve had play dates together, it’s becoming more and more clear that they’re becoming more and more aware of the differences between them.

Last week, Kate and I were in fits of giggles at the exchange we witnessed between them. We were at our house and Ava was trying to get her bike up the step so they would ride together, the bike was obviously to heave for her, so Tristan, on noticing her struggle, came striding over like a big little macho man, took the bike from her and hoisted it up the steps, like a true gentleman helping a damsel in distress, she in return praised his manliness with the following exchange:

Ava: Tristan, you’re SO strong, you’re the strongest boy in the world! *strokes male ego*

Tristan: *flexing his muscles, ego suitably stroked* Yes, I am the strongest boy in the world!

Ava & Tristan 2

It will be interesting to see how their friendship develops as they both continue on their individual journeys of self discovery!

Ava’s Adoption Story Book

I’ve started a rather large project, creating a story/photo book for Ava all about how she came to be adopted by us. In it, I want to include every little bit of personal information that I can remember about her beautiful birth mother, her motivation for placing her and all the little snippets of information and anecdotes I can remember, like how she craved and loved apricots during her pregnancy. I want it to be a book that is fairly age appropriate now but one that she will also treasure when she’s older and that, God forbid, we not be around when she starts the search for her birth mother, that she have all the information available to her in one easy format and kept all together.

The first part of this project meant that I spent hours trawling through thousands of photographs taken over the last few years, but focusing mostly on those from the time she was born, I want to include all the photo’s taken of her with her birth mother and her biological grandmother the day at the hospital and the day of our court appearance. I want her to see how much she was loved.

It was amazing looking through these old photo’s, it made me realize my baby is just not a baby anymore, there is nothing babyish about her, she is well and truly a little girl now, a beautiful little girl who grew from such a tiny 2.9kg new born.

These’s photo’s bring back only memories of beauty for me.

Her very first smile as we took this photo on her 6 week birthday!

I showed Ava some of the photo’s taken of her with her birth mother over the weekend. She was quite fascinated and really intrigued by the story that went with the photo’s. Of course she has always known that she never grew in my tummy, I always tell her she grew in Mommy’s heart but because she has started to figure out that babies come out of mommies tummies, she was quite intrigued with the concept of her tummy mummy. And while looking through the photo’s she kept repeating how she grew in that mommy’s tummy but grew in this mommy’s heart.

*bless*

Na Lekker Lag Kom Lekker Huil!

Summer is in full swing in Jozi and Ava and I have spent the weekend outdoors enjoying the sunshine and the warm weather. We have spent the last two days switching between the swimming pool and teaching her how to use the Slip & Slide.

On a side note – Slip & Slides are not nearly as much fun when you’re a 40 year old adult! For starters I have lost my childhood fearlessness and was too scared to take a running leap onto the slip and slide, but chose rather to get down on my hands and knee’s and then try and launch myself with as much force as possible down the slip and slide. It hurt. It hurt a lot and after two days of it, my stomach muscles are so sore from sliding around. But Ava has had the best fun playing on her slip and slide and it brought back so many memories of my own childhood.

Ava Slippy Slide Oct 12

Of course, as with that old Afrikaans expression of na lekker lag kom lekker huil (after nice laughing comes nice crying – rough translation) the weekend was not without it’s injuries either. Aside from my ridiculously sore stomach muscles, Ava also managed to take a nasty fall while running around the pool. After repeating myself about 500 times, as you do with a toddler, to stop running along the side of the pool, she took a horrible fall, cutting her chin and bruising her cheek in the process, during a mad dash from the pool back to her slippy slide!

Ava Bruised Oct 2012
But children are amazingly resilient and I was amazed that even after such a horrible fall, she was up and running, blood running down her chin, in a big rush, no time to care, to get back down her “slippy slide”.
How was your weekend?

Do You See A Pattern Here?

Ava is not what I’d call a timid child. She is a very lively, very boisterous child. While she is a girls girl, she also loves to play with boys. The rougher the better. She doesn’t scare easily and is quite a toughie, often to the detriment of her friends who often land up getting slam-dunked/bashed/wrestled with, whether they like it or now.

One of her favourite things is jumping…. on her trampoline, on a jumping castle, on the couch, on her bed, on her father’s crotch, on my stomach, it doesn’t really matter, she just likes being physically active and on the move constantly, she never stands still. Now I know a lot of people say that about their toddlers, but when Ava is observed with a group of children her own age, she is active, noticeably more so than a lot of her peers.

She also loves going to parties and there is a definite pattern I’ve noticed at the parties she attends. While some children are bouncing on the jumping castle, she is literally leaping into the air! Sometimes her antics actually scare me.

Do you see a pattern? All of these pictures were taken in the last year!

(Almost) Wordless (Almost) Wednesday – Spring Hats 2012

I can’t believe that an entire year has past since Ava’s first ever spring hat parade at school.

Spring Hat Parade

The preparation for this years spring hat parade was quite different. Ava was super excited and insisted on doing her own creation.  Granted I did help her, but the design and all its elements were her idea.

Spring Hat 2012

I can’t believe how big my baby has gotten!

My Intuitive Child!

One of Ava’s most striking physical characteristics are her eyes. It’s one of her characteristics that people always focus on and always comment on. I’ve been told she’s an old soul, wise beyond her years, that when you look into the depths of her eyes it’s like she knows a secret the rest of us have yet to learn, people who believe in such things say she’s an Indigo child, she’s been called mysterious, intelligent and highly intuitive. Look at those eyes!

PinkButterflyPrincess

So why am I telling you this?

Because sometimes its easy to underestimate the depths of her understanding, sometimes I forget how spiritually in touch she is, how very very intuitive she is but this morning, while on our way to school, she reminded me.

I was sitting in the passenger seat, Walter was driving and she was sitting in her car seat behind Walter. Out of the blue, we had this exchange:

Ava – Mommy you’re MY Momma

Me – Yes my darling, I’m your Momma

Ava – And you’re by BEST friend!

Me – Yes my love, I am your best friend!

*reaching behind me to hold her hand I turned to look at her and she was staring at me intently*

Ava – I love you soooo much!

Me – I love you sooo much too my love!

Ava – Mommy, don’t be sad any more!

My little girl knows something is up, she knows something has happened. She may not be talking about it, but in her wisdom, she knows.

That exchange, coupled with her behaviour over the past week, which has included hitting, pushing and biting her best friend has led to our decision to take her to a play therapist. That and our SW from Procare has also recommended that we do so, just to ensure that she really is ok, we’ve also been encouraged to talk openly to her about what happened last week and to create an environment for her where she knows that at any time, it’s ok for her to talk about or ask about Baby K.

On a side note – the way her mind works amazes me some times. Last night Walter was telling her that she has such cute leggies he’s going to eat them up. Her response:

No Daddy! You can’t eat my legs cos then I won’t be able to walk!
