On Friday, after collecting Granny for baby sitting duties and dropping Ava off at school, Walter and I headed out to Bela Bela to attend his companies year end function. It has to be said, his company functions are always epic, whether it be their Christmas in July party or their year end functions, which have included trips to Mauritius, Cruises and a stay at The Palace Of The Lost City, we’ve always had a great time and this year was no different. We were treated to an all expenses paid, 3 day weekend at Mabula Game Lodge.
It was boiling hot when we arrived, so we quickly checked in and spent the afternoon at the pool sipping on pink cocktails. After a divine late afternoon nap, we started our preparation for the party that evening, a rock themed party which included a dinner in the beautiful boma setting at the main lodge, followed by a rock party with entertainment supplied by Guns ‘n Posers! The band were awesome and in no time we were all behaving like hooligans as we danced and head-banged to 80’s classic rock from Guns ‘n Roses and AC/DC. Walter works with a really great bunch of people and soon the party was very rowdy and wild. Despite the frequent power interruptions, which we were later to hear, was caused by a fire in the laundry room because of a huge electrical storm, we still managed to have a fantastic time, falling into bed well past 1am. I have not had a party like that since… well since Walter’s year end function last year!
On Saturday, both Walter and I and I think everyone who attended the party, where feeling very broken so we were thrilled to have a day of R&R. I spent the whole day sipping more pink drinks, lazing at the side of the pool and just relaxing. In the afternoon, Walter played a round of golf and I was booked into the spa for an aromatherapy massage which was just what I needed as a pick me up for the planned evenings festivities.
At 17h30, we were collected in open top Land Rovers and taken on a sunset game drive, where I got to experience a first…. Having been on plenty of game drives, this was the first time ever that I got to see a Jackal. A tiny baby Jackal, who’s mom had left alone at his warren to head out hunting. He was very curious about us and came right up to the Landie to have a good look and sniff on us all.
After more game viewing, we stopped at an open clearing where a small herd of zebra were grazing, with a few very small babies, where we were joined by another 6 Landies delivering the rest of our party. The rangers set up tables with snacks and wines and drinks and we stood out in the open bush enjoying sun downers, it was really spectacular, a beautiful sunset and just as the sun went down, we heard the howling of a pack of Jackals and they literally ran across the clearing not even 20m’s from where we were standing.
After sun downers we were all piled back into the Landies and driven to a new location, a beautiful bonfire, candle lit camp, fully set up for an outdoor bush braai.
The bush braai was fabulous and eventually we crawled, stumbled and fell back into the last Landie to take the last of us back to the lodge. We had a young ranger, who was more than happy to follow the drunken shouts of turning the lights off and we drove back to the lodge in almost darkness, it was really such a fun, and probably very stupid adventure.
We checked out this morning after breakfast and made the drive back to Jozi, tired, relaxed and feeling very over indulged. But what an amazing weekend it has been, filled with good food, wine, pink drinks and new friends for me too.
The only problem with a weekend like this one was that it was too short…. I have SERIOUS Monday blues and really am having to dig deep to find the motivation to make the last push before we go on holiday!
