Behind Closed Doors…. Psychologically Terrifying

I haven’t done a book review in a while. Not that I haven’t been reading mind you, I’ve read a lot, but nothing that has made me want to sit down and write about my thoughts on a book!

Till I read Behind Closed Doors!

behind-closed-doorsEveryone knows a couple like Jack and Grace: he has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You’d like to get to know Grace better. But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love.

Picture this: a dinner party at their perfect home, the conversation and wine flowing. They appear to be in their element while entertaining. And Grace’s friends are eager to reciprocate with lunch the following week. Grace wants to go, but knows she never will. Her friends call—so why doesn’t Grace ever answer the phone? And how can she cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim?

And why are there bars on one of the bedroom windows?

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

This book is toted as the next Gone Girl. I’m not sure that I would agree. It’s a very different type of thriller, far more psychological in that there is no mystery as to what has happened, you know what is going on from the get go of the story, but the psychological mind games it will play with you as the story unfolds, made it a book I could not put down.

“‘Fear,’ he whispered. ‘There is nothing quite like it. I love how it looks, I love how it feels, I love how it smells. And I especially love the sound of it.’ I felt his tongue on my cheek. ‘I even love the taste of it.’”

Jack is the kind of character who made me simultaneously nauseous and anxious. I hated him and I felt Grace’s desperation, it was palpable. Like watching a horror with your hands covering your eyes and sneaking a peak only to be more terrified by the glimpse you had caught.

I think what made the story even more terrifying was wondering if such evil people really do exist in the world and then coming to the conclusion that they actually do.

I am ambivalent about the ending. The story ends very abruptly and while one of your questions is answered, the ending does leave you wondering what would happen?

This book has also a semifinalist in the 2016 Good Reads awards for best mystery/thriller, so it’s well worth the read, albeit a disturbing one!

Just finished the book last night – what a great read! Very gripping. I must admit that I would have liked a twist, but either way, this book was very captivating 🙂 Thanks for the review.

It doesn’t have a twist, but the suspense and intensity builds as the story unfolds!

I enjoyed the book, but it ended way too abruptly for my liking.
