A terrifying psychological thriller about obsession and power, perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Before I Go to Sleep.
Clarissa is becoming more and more frightened of her colleague, Rafe. He won’t leave her alone, and he refuses to take no for an answer. He is always there.
Being selected for jury service is a relief. The courtroom is a safe haven, a place where Rafe can’t be. But as a violent tale of kidnap and abuse unfolds, Clarissa begins to see parallels between her own situation and that of the young woman on the witness stand.
Realizing that she bears the burden of proof, Clarissa unravels the twisted, macabre fairytale that Rafe has spun around them – and discovers that the ending he envisions is more terrifying than she could have imagined.
First off…. a trigger warning, their is a rather terrifying scene of rape in this book. Actually, whole stalker theme throughout is rather terrifying.
So where to start.
I have such mixed feelings about this book, it really didn’t grab me from the get go, but took a while for me to get into it, but by half way through, I was utterly terrified and couldn’t put it down, I needed to know what was going to happen next and if Clarissa was ever going to get a chance to reclaim her life.
The book looks quite intensely at stalking and what the victim of stalking needs to be subjected to in order to get protection, if at all.
It started slowly for me and then got really really intense but with a massively disappointing ending in the same vain as Gone Girl. I will say this, the extreme anxiety I was feeling last week I believe is partly as a result of this book. Once it ended my anxiety practically dissipated.
Scary scary shit! But worth the read if you like to be totally freaked out!
