The One Change I Made To My Kids School Routine That Gave Me Peace Of Mind

There is one change I made to my kids school routine this year that has made a world of difference to me. Ava is now in grade 2 & Hannah is in her final year of pre-school. As a working mom, that’s already a few years of juggling work schedules and stressing over how to get my kids home from school, safely, every day.

School Transport…

We’ve used school transport for a couple of years now and honestly, I have literally worried every day while waiting for confirmation that my children are home safely. All the transport companies we have used, advertised that they met safety standards but we had incidents with every single one of them that made my blood run cold and destroyed the trust relationship in seconds!

The one company, while claiming they were not breaking the law in terms of school transport, were loading so many kids into a passenger vehicle that my eldest had to sit on the front seat and the kids in the back were forced to share seat belts. This is against the law for a passenger vehicle, but because they were a registered transport company, they could operate this way legally because of a loophole in the law.

So we switched transport companies.

To one that uses a minibus fitted with safety belts for each child and who advertised that they had a childminder on board as well as a driver to ensure the safety of the children.

Only….. they didn’t have a childminder on board. And I only discovered this a few months later, when I got a message from Ava’s school teacher informing me that she had found Ava and Hannah wandering around the school field, unsupervised one afternoon after school. On investigating and complaining to the transport company, I was horrified to discover that there was no childminder on the bus and the driver had left Ava and Hannah unattended in the bus while he went into the school to fetch other kids.

Let that sink in….

He left my then 7 year old and 4 year old, alone, in an unlocked vehicle! I was both horrified and so damn relieved that there weren’t more disastrous results from this act of pure negligence. I don’t EVER leave my children unsupervised in a vehicle, never ever, so how dare a company that I am paying to ensure my children’s safety do this. After I complained about it, the driver was angry with my children for having told me what happened.

The connundrum

Who could I actually trust to bring my children home safely? Who could give me peace of mind? Who could I trust that would not disappoint me? Who would stick to all the claims they made about their transport?

There is ONLY one….

Cool Kids Cabs!

So what sets them apart from every other school transport company?

Cool (kids’) Cabs offers the highest safety features, setting us apart from any other transportation service for children.

✓ Maintenance:

All our vehicles are regularly maintained and daily checks are conducted before leaving the office, every single day.

✓ Recognisable Branding:

Not only does this make it easy for children to identify their Cool (kids’) Cabs at collections but it means that other drivers can report our drivers’ behaviour and it works to discourage possible hijackings.

✓ 24/7 Tracking:

Anyone can install a tracking device, so what sets ours apart? The behind the scenes team who track and monitor every vehicle, every second of every day, is what makes us a cut above the rest. No driver is ever alone when on the roads! Our wonderful tracking team monitors all vehicles to ensure that vehicles are running on time, are sticking to designated routes and are at the correct pick up and drop off points. The team also monitors driver behaviour through these devices (including speeds, excessive braking etc.) This office is the source of the personalised SMS notifications which you receive on pick up and drop off. By ensuring that drivers are not distracted by phones and interruptions, we ensure that each skilled lady is fully focused on the task at hand – driving your child safely.

✓ Onboard Camera:

In addition to live tracking, our control toom has visual contact with each vehicle and its occupants, through our onboard cameras, allowing us to view what is happening in each cab.

✓ Driver Behaviour:

Through the amazing technology in the vehicles, the control room is able to monitor driver behaviour in real time, ensuring that drivers are not speeding, braking too hard or revving unnecessarily.

✓ Car seats:

We have our own set of car seats and ensure that every child is transported in the appropriate seat. Upon signing up to our services, we asses which would be the best seat for your child, based on their age, weight and height. Our drivers will arrive with the car seat already installed and are trained in knowing how to correctly strap your child in.

✓ No more than 4 children:

All our vehicles carry a maximum of four children but seldom do we load that many.

✓ No waiting:

We offer direct routes with minimal disruption to your child’s journey. Unlike bussed services, we ensure that your child is taken home promptly after school; no waiting around while other children are being collected and dropped off.

✓ Reporting:

We keep track of everything that happens; from driver behaviour to the exact time of collection and drop off. Should parents wish to check any details, they are most welcome to request these reports for reviewing.

They have been a game changer for me this year.

I’m travelling a lot for work and have such incredible peace of mind knowing that FINALLY my children are safe, they’re being transported safely and I never have a moment of worry about school pick ups anymore. The communication from Cool Kids Cabs is TOP notch. If the driver is even 5 minutes late, I get alerted, as soon as she has my girls, I get an alert, as soon as she has signed my children over to our Eva, I get alerted. It has literally changed my work day in the most positive ways.

Sipho is our Superhero!

Ava and Hannah are crazy about her, she has such a lovely nurturing and motherly vibe that further adds to my peace of mind.

They say it takes a village…

And this is so very true. Especially because we don’t have family we can turn to to assist us with our kids, both my husband and my families live very far away so we are super reliant on our tiny village keeping our family safe, cared for, nurtured and running effectively. I am so grateful to have Sipho and Cool Kids Cabs as part of my village, the peace of mind and trust I have in them is invaluable.

School transport can be so iffy. We are lucky that I have a job which allows me to drop off and pick up, without relying on hubby. However, we take turns.
On Friday, I saw the driver of a minibus with kids, leave the kids in the vehicle and run in to go fetch kids inside our school. I make it my duty to report these people to the school office, so that the parents and the transport company can be informed.
It takes a village and if it was my child, I would want someone to tell me.
