Swear On This Life – An unexpected privilege and joy!

There are a couple of books that I have read that have literally taken my breath away. That are so unexpectedly good that they stir my emotions, break my heart and leave me feeling hollow and desperate for more when the story ends. Books that I start out reading with no great expectation but that left me desperate for more? Jojo Moyes’s Me Before You was such a book and The Fault In Our Stars by John Green are two examples of such books for me. And then I quite literally stumbled across Swear on This Life by Rene Carlino on Friday morning and it has definitley moved into the same category, emotional, poignant and just beautiful.

Swear On This LifeImagine opening a book and discovering that someone else has written your life story.

When a buzzy debut novel from mysterious author J. Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an introductory-level writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled writing career and a bumpy long-term relationship, the last thing Emiline wants to do is celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two neighborhood friends growing up in rural Ohio, struggling with abusive parents and dreaming of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town.

That’s because the novel is patterned on her own dark and desperate childhood. She soon realizes that “J. Colby” is Jase, the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade, but that doesn’t explain why he wrote their painful story through her eyes instead of his own-and why he chose to take some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she’ll know for sure is to find “J. Colby,” but is she strong enough to handle the truth behind his fiction?

I’ve never read any of Renee’s books before but after this 5 star read, I am a fan and have added all her other books to my reading list after finishing Swear On This Life.

This book, is beautifully and exquisitely written, it will take make you experience every emotion imaginable, your heart will ache and burst with joy. Deeply poignant and peppered with magical bits of wisdom throughout. I literally read it in 24 hours, I was hooked from the opening lines and could not put the book down!

Just read it, you will go on a journey of discovery, you will laugh, you will cry and you will be blown away by the beauty of this book! I guarantee it.

I literally sobbed at the end of this book, both for the beautiful story I was privileged to enjoy and because the book had come to an end and I wanted more!
