Ava’s 5th Birthday Party – Where kids drank “beer”& mom’s wrestled!

Being a mom is a learning process and doing mom things takes learning too. With time and experience, I find I do better with the task of being a mom and arranging mom things.

Ava’s birthday on Saturday was a case in point. With each birthday, I get more and more disheartened at how expensive everything is and how little the kids actually appreciate the cost and decor and effort that goes into having a party. My idea of the perfect kids party is very different to Ava’s. I think fancy venue, expensive decor, lots of eats when the reality is so very different. All she wants are presents, a cake, her friends and a bowl of Cheese Curls and a few Fizzers and, hey, presto it’s a party!

I’ve spent excessive amounts of money on her party in years gone by, I’ve agonized over every single detail and spent a small fortune on decor and expensive cakes. We’ve had parties at home – that will never happen again, and also parties at venues but they’re always either a ton of work or very very expensive and in my mind, it’s an expense she really just can’t appreciate.

So this year, I decided to do things a little differently. Well that and all the meh’s I’ve been dealing with lately meant that it was the most plain and simple and totally disorganized party ever but you know what else? It was also THE BEST party we’ve given her so far. She, along with her friends, had a great time and I know the Mom’s and Dad’s enjoyed it too.

I chose to have her party at Hobo’s Hide Livery & Partyland this year because she wanted a pony party and because they were really cheap! R900 for the ENTIRE day and it included unlimited pony rides for all the kids in attendance.

I went back to my old faithful cake lady, Alta from Zoe’s Cakes For Fun. The cake was gorgeous, but very simple and tasted delicious In addition, she only charged me R550 for the large cake and 30 matching cupcakes! WINNING!

We had a few balloons and a water slide with a 5L bottle of cheap bubble bath and just let the kids have a blast!

For eats, I ordered platters from Pick ‘n Pay Entertaining, which can be ordered online and delivered at a specified time, directly to you, again winning! I’ve been doing this for the last few years and it’s a fantastic service offered by Pick ‘n Pay, we’ve never been let down or disappointed by them.

Of course, the mom’s and dad’s had fun too, we had a few beers on hand (Ava kept insisting that her iced tea was kids beer!) and wine for the mom’s and sooner or later…. you just knew what was going to happen right….

Yep! I got pushed into the pool, fully clothed and well… payback’s a bitch in a Mr Price jumpsuit! And I made sure I got Kate back good and proper too, much to the children’s delight and squealing about Mom Wresting!

I also found some great and cheap photo booth props from Mr Price that I took along and these landed up being a hit with the littles and the grown ups too!

And of course, no kids party, in my opinion, is complete without the truly amazing Catherine and her magic camera! All of the images above are courtesy of her!

In the end, it turned out to be the least fuss, most fun party ever!

JusT goes to confirm that kids don’t need a lot to be happy. We adults focus too much on decor and everything being perfect! Kids just want finger foods they can grab and go and have fun with their friends and family,

    The pictures are lovely

The party was absolutely gorgeous and you look fabulous. You have inspired me to have a simpler party next year. This year I spend an absolute fortune and was totally disheartened at what it got me in the end. Although you are right, Catherine is an absolute must and worthy every cent (although she is also so reasonable).
