Back From The Holiday That Was*Almost* Not Worth It…

Apologies for the break in transmission, but we went on a little mini winter break to the coast, which I would have blogged about, but somehow my schedule is packed so tight, sometimes it feels like I don’t have time to breathe and I’m on maternity leave!

So we headed off to Ballito last Saturday with our kids & our besties. The holiday was really wonderful, our accommodation was fantastic and I’d totally recommend it to anyone. The views from our apartment were fabulous!

We ate ice cream every day, went for long walks on the beach because it was literally on our door step, we even went swimming on a couple of days. After our children were in bed, we drank wine and spent evenings chatting & catching up.

But Hannah, oh boy, Hannah…

She battled. She struggled to settle into the new surrounding, her 3rd “home” in 4 months. She cried & wined all time, to the point that Walter has nicknamed her Fattis & Monis. She had to be held constantly & didn’t want to be put down for a second. She also barely slept… battling to nap during the day and awake 8 – 10 times a night every night. It was exhausting. It was sleep deprivation that saw Walter & I snappy with each other & skipping opportunities to go to the beach so that we could nap!

It was one of those holidays that while absolutely fabulous has Walter desperate to go back to work tomorrow & me wondering if it was actually even worth it. I’m exhausted & of course now that we’re home, Hannah is now battling to adapt to being back here again, so we’re still not getting much sleep and are still dealing with Fattis & Monis.

I need a sleeping holiday!

I must confess that any holidays away from home to fill me with trepidation and some concern. They do seem to often be a lot of work, severely less comfortable than staying at home, and I usually return feeling exhausted and needing a holiday.

Kennith has been trying to set up a Knysna trip in September, I am busy listing the reasons why I would rather stay home.

Oh dear 🙁 although we took Bradley on his first holiday when he was 4 months old, and it was a disaster too! We ended up spending it with him in Umhlanga hospital!
Poor wee mite, hope she settles soon.

I completely understand, we build these pictures and its
nothing like that. After our holiday down at ballito, which was okay, I just wanted to get home, where things made sense.

This is so totally normal in the first year though – going away with a baby is exhausting – both my kids were so gross on holidays that we avoided them until they were two years old each. Stupid, but it saved my sanity! And hopefully now we can make up for it (they can also behave on an airplane now and don’t need prams etc which makes life a gazillion times easier!). Welcome back dolly we missed you!

Jaden was like this for many, many years. Holidays were almost not worth the effort because it upset him so much! Gladly he’s over it now and we have wonderful holidays!

Ai Sharon, we had the boys on holiday at 3 months and it was not great too! I am sure the next one will be fabulous.

BTW – you drank my absolute favorite Cap Classique!

It was a stunning holiday! Just a pity Hannah wasn’t coping so well. After spending so much time with your girls I miss them terribly now! They are such sweethearts! Each special in their own way.

I also usually feel like I need a holiday after the holiday. Gosh, kids are quite exhausting. Sorry that Hannah struggled. They say it gets easier as the kids get older but I think it depends on the type of kid. Holidays with Child2 are usually not so much fun unless I prepare him to death! Not always the easiest thing if you don’t know what to expect. I guess one could say we are learning to manage it better.
