#fat2fab – Week 23: 23kg’s Lost & Don’t Show Your LCHF Ignorance!

fat2fabSo 23 weeks later and I’ve lost 23kg’s!

Never in my life has a diet lifestyle worked this well for me. It’s become a completely natural way for us and I honestly don’t ever see myself reverting back to the traditional and rapidly being debunked food pyramid or “balanced diet” that was systematically making me fat and even more importantly, making me sick (irritable bowel syndrome, insulin resistance, high blood pressure etc). I didn’t realize just how sick I was, how many symptoms I was dealing with on a daily basis, that I thought were “normal” until I eliminated all the unhealthy carbs and low fat shit & sugar from my diet.

Here’s a reminder of what 126kg’s & 118kg’s looks like:

Graduation Ceremony

And here we are almost 6 months later…. at 98kg’s and 95kg’s respectively:

If you’re interested in learning more about LCHF, then I’d really encourage you to follow Diet Doctor – Dr Andreas Eenfeldt:

My name is Andreas Eenfeldt and I am a Swedish medical doctor specialized in family medicine. I want to find out how to get as healthy as possible using natural methods such as diet, exercise and perhaps a supplement (vitamin D) or two.

The idea to eat less fat and less saturated fat was certainly a mistake. Inadvertently that advice may be the biggest reason behind the epidemics of obesity and diabetes. More and more people realize this. It’s time for a health revolution.

It’s a pet peeve of mine when I see South African’s referring to LCHF at the Prof. Time Noakes diet because really that is not the truth. Yes Prof. Noakes is heading up the paradigm shift here in South Africa, but this is NOT his diet. LCHF has been used for more than a century to successfully treat obesity and diabetes, prior the invention of insulin medication.

Another bug bear of mine is when so called “experts” claim that LCHF is unhealthy or could kill you and then go on to discuss a high protein diet. Guys, LCHF is NOT a high protein diet. It is also NOT a carb free diet. It does contain carbs, but good carbs that come from milk and cheese and cream and cauliflower and nuts etc etc etc. If you’re “banting” or following LCHF for weight loss, then ideally you want to keep your carb count low, under 50g’s per day, and, if you’re as sensitive to carbs as I am (and most people with Insulin Resistance & Diabetes) then you want to keep that count even lower, I try to keep count daily at around 25g’s. If you’re not over weight and are following LCHF for healthy living, then you can increase your carb count to around 100g’s per day and include more root veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes etc, into your daily diet.

I know my biggest fear when embarking on this diet was what it would do to my cholesterol, but that myth is also rapidly being debunked too, there are literally thousands of references online worth reading about how LCHF is beneficially for those with cholesterol issues, you can read a few here: Cholesterol is also covered in The Real Meal Revolution as well.

I am eating a fabulous diet of nutritionally rich foods, all home made so I know what is going into them. None of those hidden sugars, disguised as another name and chemicals and crap in our diets and we are all feeling the benefits of it. Start reading your food labels, you may be horrified as to what goes into some of the foods we eat, sugar has over 50 different names, cleverly used to disguise added sugars into low fat products etc.

Am I passionate about LCHF? You bet I am. When I think of the thousands and thousands of rands I’ve stupidly spent on pills, shakes, dietitian’s, fads and other miracle, “natural” and “healthy” cures for obesity, I am livid and I feel ripped off.

And if you’re interested in learning something about real nutrition or are interested in following an LCHF lifestyle, then I’d really really encourage you to watch this, a fascinating look at what the modern high carb low fat diet is doing to us and the polar opposite, the results of LCHF diets on health!

Congrats! You are both looking amazing. I have been doing LCHF for the last 2 months and have lost 8 kg’s, feel good and love cooking again. It really has changed how I look at food. How strict are you with your girls? Finding it a bit hard with the kids and cutting out their “crap”.

I’m not very strict with my girls. They eat the same meals as us but I still allow treats etc. for them.

So how is your cholesterol? I must say that was my biggest concern too

My HDL cholesterol has always been really low. I’m planning on having it tested in the next couple of weeks, after I’ve been banting for 6 months.
But I don’t want to have a regular cholesterol test, I want a count and particle test done that tests the size of LDL cholesterol as new research is proving that if you have high LDL with large particles then it’s harmless, it’s only LDL with small particles that can cause problems. There are very few lab’s in SA that offer the particle size test so busy researching that as my Dr will have to send my bloods to the sports institute for testing.

I just got back from overseas holiday and whilst I tried to follow lchf it was so difficult. Airline food, hotel food, eating out etc without the higher fat I found myself starving. I’ve definitely put on weight and I’m so mad about it as I was doing so well. Such a pity that lchf is not catered for as yet…

I’ve been doing LC for a week now. I’m one of them Fatphobics so I’m reluctant to include high fat. I have upped my good fat intake though. I’ve lost 2.6kg so far and I know that I could have lost more if I went all in.

    Keep up the good work.
