How do you feel now that you’re in your forties?

I am a happier version of 30 year of self.  I have reached the point in my life where I have accepted all my flaws and shortcoming and I make the most of my life and also use some of these to my advantage.

What has been your greatest achievement since turning forty?

I completed a very critical project at work with very limited resources, I surprised myself and I think quite a few other people in the process. 2016 was one of the toughest years for both my career and personal life. The reward however was receiving employee of the year award which was an awesome way to end of 2016.

Now, as a mature woman, do you have any regrets? Anything you wish you could go back and do differently?

No I don’t have any regrets; the mistake I have made and the lessons I learned on my journey to 40 were valuable and they played an immense roll in who I am today.

If you could talk to your 20 or 30 something self, what would be one piece of advice you’d give yourself.

Don’t be scared to follow your dreams don’t procrastinate, if you are passionate about something set goals to achieve them.  Don’t compare yourself with others this create self doubt. We are our own worst enemy; or let me say I am and by changing this I have manage to achieve goals I never thought was possible.

What has been one/some of the biggest changes you’ve noticed within yourself since turning forty?

Physically there have been a few changes; my grey hair became more difficult to hide  so now I am working at embracing it. I unfortunately wake up with some aches and pain in the morning but nothing some vitamins and minerals can’t fix.

NO is a complete sentence and I am no longer scared to use it!  I have learnt that I cannot make everyone happy and by making that decision my life got easier.

Forgiving people even that person who stole my wedding ring, she only stole an object and but did not steal my awesome 27 years happiness with my husband.

Spending quality time with friend and family that matter and I cherished every moment.

What do you still hope to achieve in your forties?

I want to travel to Europe and experience the rich history that the countries on my bucket list have to offer (Nederlands, Italy, France, Sweden and Czech Republic)

What advice would you give to women who are fearful about approaching forty?

Forty is the new Thirty. I know when you are young 40 seem so old, well it did for me now I look back and think wow life is awesome at 40. I even look at 50 and 60 and think how times have changed. Ellen DeGeneres is 60 and she does not look a day older than 40 and that is my ultimate goal.  I have settled down; I know what I want and I embrace every moment.

What is one of societies stereotypes about women in their forties that you wish you could change?

Do not let others dictate what you should be wearing or which makeup suits your age. If you feel comfortable wear it!  There is this stereotype that glitter is taboo in you 40’s I say mmmmh if you love glitter embrace it as it make you feel beautiful.

 Any parting thoughts or comments?

Stop comparing you life to others. You will always think there is someone that is prettier and smarter than you. Accept yourself for who you are, we are all unique, beautiful and special in our own way. Embrace those grey hair…… it’s the new fashion trend everyone is trying to get it from a bottle.

Thank you Ilona for taking the time to participate. I love your attitude of embracing all that you are and not allowing society to dictate how and who you should be! Also, check out Ilona’s Instagram, it is beautifully curated! Ilona is truly Ilonique!
