The One About Blog Comments

blog commentsThanks everyone who kindly and respectfully weighed in on yesterday’s series of posts! I have really enjoyed the open, honest & respectful conversation this has started. Long may it last – the respectful part anyway.

These conversations crossed all the SM platforms and I really enjoyed participating, but Natasha said something that has kind of stuck with me. I think it was on Twitter and it was about now that her blog is WP hosted, she responds to every single comment on her blog.

That statement, along with comments I noticed across the various blogs yesterday about how some bloggers/commenters weren’t sure if their comments actual meant anything, really were a light bulb moment for me.

I rarely comment on my own blog posts, usually if I reply to a comment it’s done via the email notification directly back to the commenter. It never even occurred to me that some people may feel that their comments just go into a big black hole and potentially don’t get acknowledged.

I love comments! I love conversations and comments for me are like a virtual conversation, whether you’re agreeing or disagreeing with me, I love to hear other people’s points of view and being stimulated to see topics from a different point of view.

I went back to yesterday’s post and like Natasha, I replied to every comment on the post, it never even crossed my mind that some commenters would feel insignificant because of a lack of response. My bad!

So short sighted on my part, I love comments, everyone likes comments and from now on I’m going to be better and more mindful of replying to comments!

WordPress is actually pretty good with that, it shows up a new comment/convo straight away, I just never thought about the impact of actually using it before.

I always click over to the person’s blog and leave a comment on their stuff, only sometimes respond to the actual comment if need be. I think it is important to respond in some way. But I guess I don’t get as many comments as you, lol!

As a non blogging follower some times it is nice once Ive put my 2c worth comment to get a reply (although not always necessary) there are also days when i feel i could comment but unsure if I should (specially on some personal blogs) as I feel maybe that should be left to the ppl who know the blogger personally even if I have followed the blogs like forever and feel like part of the “family”. Lastly on a bit of a personal note I saw another pic of you from the jhb blog meetup and just got to tell you that pic really showed how awesum you are doing on your weigtloss journey (not meaning to sound stalkish) but had to just let you know

Thanks so much W! That means a lot to me, I am very proud of my weight loss journey so far!
On the comments thing… seriously, I KNOW I speak for ALL bloggers when we say this… we LOVE comments, it’s the reason we blog! It’s like a squishy virtual hug.
No matter how personal the post, I love comments, they make me feel validated, they show me different points of view, they encourage me, they inspire me, they make me feel like I wrote something worth while. There is nothing worse than pouring your heart into a blog post and receiving no comments!
So please please please remember that.

Yes. Replying to comments with a comment is better. Many people (like me) read posts and the comments, but i mostly do not post a comment. So it feels to me like the blogger did a drive-by post, and just never looks at it again. It’s a pet peeve of mine on Facebook too.

There was a time that i had a policy that the last comment on EVERY blog post and Facebook post HAD to be mine. So if someone else commented, i had to reply again. Not to have the last word, but to show that i saw and loved every comment. Now, at the very least, i ‘like’ every single comment on my posts. Always. It’s just more… well… social! 🙂

I agree 100% with Wobbly. I do exactly the same. Also a non blogging follower and a lot of the time I would like to comment, but never do. This post has also inspired me to start commenting and not just “stalk” the blogs. Thanks for the light bulb moment for us to.
