The One About Bone Broth

Last week, I carelessly mentioned to Walter that I was amazed that I hadn’t been sick with a cold once, in absolute months. Of course, the second the words left my mouth, I knew I was tempting fate and sure enough, on Saturday it started… a bona fida cold, irritated nose and sinuses and snot that just wouldn’t stop.

A friend in the computer suggested I drink bone broth. I’ve read a lot about bone broth since starting my own personal research and reading into LCHF and so I thought I’d give it a try as it apparently has so many health benefits:

Well I’ve had two cups of bone broth in the last 24 hours and guess what? My cold is gone. I’m not really sure how to marry the two together, really, I’m such a skeptic when it comes to these types of things, but there you go… I made, I drank it and it was surprisingly delicious and now I have no cold.

I made my bone broth with marrow bones, loosely following the recipe in The Real Meal Revolution.

Marrow Bone Broth:

  • Marrow Bones
  • Onions
  • Celery
  • Cloves of Garlic
  • Leeks
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Bay leaf

It’s always best to use roasted/cooked bones, so I stared off by roasting my marrow bones, till cooked, in the oven with just a little olive oil and salt & pepper. Once they were roasted, I simply dumped them in a pot with the cooking juices, threw in a few cloves of garlic, a roughly chopped onion, some celery stalks, leeks (you can also use carrots) and salt & pepper and then covered everything with water, put the lid on, turned the stove on to its lowest setting and left it for 12 hours.

Once cooked, you simply strain and drink! I had a lot left over so I’ve frozen mind into cup size portions, should I need to drink more and also to use as stock for future cooking. I really am trying to live by the eat clean philosophy and eliminate as much processed junk from our diets as possible and believe me, this bone broth, it tastes a whole lot better than any shop bought stock I’ve ever used!

You can use this basic recipe for any bone broth, whether it be chicken, beef or lamb.

I also made these totally incredible stuffed Jalapeño’s, you can find the recipe here: Get Slim/Recipe’s

My kids and I had bronchitus a few weeks back, I made 2 pots of chicken soup, drank it daily and overcame my bronchitus. Sadly I couldnt get the kids to drink enough, and they ended up with antibiotics. I’m thinking I will make it weekly now during Winter. If you reduce the marrow bone or chicken carcass broth down (and add some red wine) it makes a lovely jus, perfect with roast meats. Keep the rwcipes coming, and you are looking fab! You must feel great!

I’m not sure. I have never tried it. Part of the reason why you want to cook it slowly and over a low heat is to extract all the minerals inside the bone but without damaging them with too much heat.
